Terrace Season in Milan: The Best Rooftops and Outdoor Spots
TERRACE SEASON
There is a week in late spring when Milan changes. The heaters come off, the awnings go up, and everyone who spent winter inside dark bars remembers the city is better outdoors.
THE ROOFTOP
The Sanctuary, Via Valenza, 16. Two reasons to go: a pool with palms around it, and Duomo light if your table faces the right way. Golden hour, one drink, stay until the lights come on.
THE GARDENS
Villa Necchi Campiglio, Via Mozart, 14. The obvious one and still worth it, especially for the wrought iron chairs left over from another decade.
Fuorimano OTBP, Via Roberto Cozzi, 3. Blue walls, a reflecting pool sunk into white gravel, the kind of quiet that makes you lower your voice without meaning to.
Lubna, Via Vezza d'Oglio, 14. Tables under an olive tree, dinner that runs late.
Onest, Via Gerolamo Turroni, 2. String lights, mismatched chairs, the feeling of someone's actual garden.
Lom Dopolavoro, Via Galileo Ferraris, 1. Brick walls, candlelight, a crowd that already knows each other.
E/N Enoteca Naturale, Via Santa Croce, 19/a. A terrace under a tree older than the building behind it, natural wine, no pretension about it.
THE MORNING VERSION
Pasticceria Sissi, Piazza Risorgimento, 6. Through an iron gate, green tables, coffee instead of a spritz.
10 Corso Como Café, Corso Como, 10. The courtyard you forget is attached to a concept store, all vines and quiet.
Oasi, Piazza Guglielmo Oberdan, 2A. Plants instead of decor, a coat rack doing more work than it should.
WORTH THE PRICE
Ralph's Bar, Via della Spiga, 5. Gold tea service, a brownie that costs what it costs.
10_11, Corso Venezia, 11. The pastry table alone is worth the reservation.
WHAT TO ORDER
A spritz, but not always Aperol. Milan runs on Campari too, more bitter, less sweet. By August, a cold glass of white wine does more work than any cocktail.
WHAT TO WEAR
Linen. Flat sandals, because you are walking there. A bag small enough to fit on the table.
Terrace season is short. The city tilts outdoors for a few months and then it is over. Be in it while it lasts.
