How to Dress Like an Italian Woman: What I Learned Living in Milan

IT STARTS WITH FIT

The single biggest difference between Italian dressing and everywhere else is fit. Italian women would rather own one perfectly tailored pair of trousers than five that almost fit. 

This is the lesson worth taking even if you take nothing else: buy less, fit better. A tailor is the best money you will spend on your wardrobe.

THE FABRIC MATTERS MORE THAN THE LABEL

Italian women have an almost unfair instinct for fabric. Linen, cotton, silk, good wool. Natural fibers that move and breathe and age well. Synthetic anything reads cheap immediately, no matter the brand.

In summer this means linen everything, in the heat-of-August way, not the Pinterest way. Trousers, shirts, dresses, all in fabric you can actually wear in 35 degrees.

THE SUNGLASSES ARE NOT OPTIONAL

Nowhere takes sunglasses as seriously as Italy. They are not an accessory, they are part of the face. A good pair, classic shape, worn constantly, often pushed up into the hair indoors. If you invest in one thing, make it the sunglasses.

GOLD, NEVER COSTUME

Italian jewelry is gold and it is real, or it looks like it could be. Delicate chains, good hoops, a watch that means something. Worn every day, not saved for occasions.

THE BAG IS AN INVESTMENT

Italian women buy fewer bags and better ones. A structured leather bag in a classic shape, in a color that goes with everything, carried until it is worn in and all the more beautiful for it. The logo matters less than the leather.

CONFIDENCE IS THE WHOLE THING

Everything above is buyable. This is not. The thing that actually makes Italian style work is the way it is worn, with a complete lack of apology. An Italian woman in a simple outfit looks incredible because she is certain she does. The clothes are only half of it.

That part you cannot order online. But the fit, the fabric, the few good pieces worn with intention, those you can. Start there, and the confidence tends to follow.
