16 Chic Accessories That Elevate Any Summer Outfit

The accessories that do the most work in summer, from raffia bags to gold hoops. Sixteen pieces that make a simple outfit look considered.

In summer the clothes get simpler. The heat strips an outfit down to its essentials, a dress, a pair of sandals, and not much else. Which means the accessories carry more weight than they do any other time of year. A plain linen dress is a plain linen dress until the right bag, the right earrings, and the right pair of sunglasses turn it into something.

These are the sixteen accessories that do that work. Some are investments, most are not.

BAGS

1. The raffia tote, large enough for a beach day and structured enough for a city one.

2. The pouch or clutch in a bright color, the thing that makes an all-neutral outfit feel deliberate.

3. The leather-trimmed straw bag, the elevated version, for when the plain raffia feels too casual.

4. The small crossbody in a warm tan, the one you carry when you want your hands free and your outfit intact.

JEWELRY

5. Gold hoops, medium weight, the single most useful piece of jewelry in summer.

6. The sculptural cuff, a wide bold bracelet that does the whole job alone.

7. Layered chain necklaces, fine and gold, worn together against bare skin.

8. The long pendant, the piece that draws the eye down and works over a tank or an open shirt.

9. Shell or beaded details, the one nod to the coastal trend worth making.

SUNGLASSES

10. The oversized frame, dramatic and flattering and impossible to overdo in summer.

11. The classic wayfarer, for the days you want to think about nothing.

12. The cat-eye, the most universally flattering shape, in tortoise or honey.

THE REST

13. The silk scarf, tied at the neck, on the bag, or over the head.

14. The woven or leather belt, the thing that pulls a loose dress into shape.

15. The flat leather sandal, the workhorse, in a color that goes with everything.

16. The straw or packable hat, for the beach and the sun and looking like you planned ahead.

If I had to choose the three that do the most, it would be the raffia tote, the gold hoops, and a good pair of sunglasses. Get those right and the rest is decoration.
